Seductive & Sultry...

The Amethyst

Perfect for the month of February, the Amethyst’s color is as unique as it is seductive, although legend has it that Amethyst will protect you from seduction. For many thousands of years, the most striking representative of the quartz family has been the jewel of royalty. The Russian Empress Catherine the Great sent thousands of miners into the Urals to look for it. In the Middle Ages, it was considered a symbol of royalty and used to decorate English regalia. In the Old World, amethyst was considered one of the Cardinal gems, in that it was one of the five gemstones considered precious above all others. Tibetans consider amethyst sacred to the Buddha and make prayer beads from it.

According to mythology, Bacchus, the Roman god of agriculture, wine and fertility had been insulted by a mortal and swore to slay the next mortal who crossed his path, creating fierce tigers to carry out his wrath. The mortal turned out to be a beautiful young woman, Amethystos, who was on her way to pay tribute to Diana. Her life was spared by Diana, who transformed the maiden into a statue of pure crystalline quartz to protect her from the brutal claws of the tigers. Bacchus wept tears of wine in remorse for his action at the sight of the beautiful statue. The god's tears then stained the quartz purple.

Amethyst is the official birthstone for February and for the Zodiac sign of Pisces.  Amethyst is suggested as a gem to give on the 4th, 6th and 17th wedding anniversaries.  What stone could be more appropriate for the month of February, particularly if there is to be plenty going on in the way of Valentine love and Mardi Gras celebrations?
