Mysterious as the Depths of Sea - The Pearl

emerald-panna

Throughout history, Pearls have conjured images of mystery, royalty and wealth. The Pearl, often called "the Queen of Gems and the Gem of Queens," has a long and interesting tale...

Throughout history, the pearl, with its warm, inner glow and iridescence, has been one of the most highly prized and sought-after gems. Countless references to the pearl can be found in the religious and mythological writings of cultures from the earliest times. Cleopatra dissolved a single pearl in a glass of wine and drank it, simply to win a wager with Mark Antony that she could consume the wealth of an entire nation in just one meal.

The Greeks held the pearl in high esteem for both its unrivaled beauty and its association with Venus and love. In 55 B.C., Julius Caesar stood on the coast of France watching his ships preparing for an invasion of England. According to his biographer, Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus, it was not only Britainís mineral wealth that persuaded Caesar to make his military move across the Channel, but mostly it was his lust for Britainís pearls!

The scientific explanation for natural pearls is almost as mystifying as folklore. The pearl begins its life as an irritant to an oyster, clam or mussel. To protect itself, the mollusk coats the intruding object with nacre, a crystalline substance that builds up over time, resulting in a shimmering, iridescent creation. The culturing process developed by man mimics nature. However the pearl got its start, this queen of gems will remind you of the joy of love.
